About the Author

Liu Jie, also known as Yisu, born in 1983, is a Bai ethnic artist renowned for his mastery of dough figurine art. He holds the title of Hubei Province Master Craftsman and is a leading inheritor of Wuhan’s intangible cultural heritage in dough figurine art. Liu’s journey began under the tutelage of master Xiao Zhanxing in 2000. Later, he studied sculpture theory and techniques with Mr. Liu Zhengde, a former Hubei Institute of Fine Arts professor. In 2013, Liu founded the “Yisu Workshop” in Wuhan, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting Chinese dough figurine culture.

His intricately detailed works, such as Lord Guan and The 108 Heroes of the Water Margin, are celebrated for their craftsmanship and artistic depth, earning acclaim both domestically and internationally. Recognized as the Fifth Hubei Province Arts and Crafts Master in 2017, Liu continues to inspire through cultural lectures and exhibitions worldwide. His con­tributions have been highlighted by media outlets, including CCTV and international publications, cementing his role as a prominent ambassador of Chinese cultural heritage through art.
