ABOUT THE SERIES

The Chinese New Year (or Spring Festival or Lunar New Year) is the most important festival in China and in Chinese communities around the world. It’s a time to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new by observing ancient and modern traditions, eating special foods, attending public events like temple fairs, cleaning family homes and buying new clothes. But most importantly, it’s a time for families to get together, especially with those family members who may be coming from far away. This book follows two youngsters from abroad as they go to visit their grandparents in Beijing, with its special neighborhoods called hutongs. We’ll experience along with the children those rituals like giving and receiving hongbao (red envelopes with money), eating a special kind of dumpling, setting off firecrackers, and listening to the stories behind the traditions. It’s a fun way to teach children about the excitement of the Chinese Spring Festival!
